EMBC '09 - Technology's Role in Understanding and Treating Conditions of the Brain.

Technology-driven breakthroughs in treating Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other neurological disorders are discussed by leading experts at the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) conference in Minneapolis. The first Innovation Roundtable, held the morning of Sept. 3, 2009, discusses technology's role in understanding and treating conditions of the brain.   Technologies covered include:  Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and its benefits; the latest functional brain imaging technologies; and the use of brain machine interface for discovering the location within the brain that creates the intent to move.  Included in the video are advancements for the use of MRI and the ethics and regulation of MRI usage for lie detection and other physiological processing; and noninvasive brain-computer interfaces for "thought" driven devices aimed at restoring functions in disabled patients.
