In 2009, IEEE honored one of the research center's top minds: Peter Franaszek, with the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal, for his constrained coding techniques that fueled the success of CDs and DVDs for storing digital information. IBM T.J. Watson Research Center received the IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition, for long-term commitment to pioneering research, innovative development and commercialization of speech recognition.
